Background of the Study

Cultural competence among healthcare providers is critical in delivering effective and patient-centered care, especially in diverse societies like Nigeria. Cultural competence refers to the ability of healthcare professionals to understand, appreciate, and effectively interact with patients from different cultural backgrounds (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). In cardiac care units, where patients may be experiencing life-threatening conditions, cultural competence is essential for improving communication, addressing patient concerns, and ensuring that care is respectful of patients’ cultural beliefs and values (Sulaimon & Nwachukwu, 2024).

In Sokoto State, a predominantly Muslim and culturally diverse region in Northern Nigeria, understanding patients' cultural perspectives can significantly influence their satisfaction with healthcare services. Patient satisfaction is closely linked to how well healthcare providers meet the emotional, cultural, and clinical needs of patients (Oluwaseun et al., 2023). Cardiac patients, in particular, may face unique challenges related to diet, medication adherence, and lifestyle changes that align with their cultural beliefs and practices. Nurses who are culturally competent are better able to tailor their care to address these challenges, thereby enhancing patient satisfaction and improving clinical outcomes (Adewale et al., 2023).

While several studies have explored cultural competence in general healthcare settings, there is a lack of research specifically focused on how nurses' cultural competence affects patient satisfaction in cardiac care units in Nigeria. This study aims to assess the impact of nurses’ cultural competence on patient satisfaction in cardiac care units in Sokoto State.

Statement of the Problem

Cardiac care units in Sokoto State face challenges in providing patient-centered care that respects cultural differences. Many nurses in the region may not have received formal training on cultural competence, which can lead to misunderstandings or miscommunication with patients. This lack of cultural awareness may affect patients’ satisfaction with care, ultimately influencing their adherence to treatment and recovery outcomes. This study seeks to explore the relationship between nurses' cultural competence and patient satisfaction in cardiac care units, with the goal of improving the quality of care in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of cultural competence among nurses in cardiac care units in Sokoto State.
  2. To examine the relationship between nurses’ cultural competence and patient satisfaction in cardiac care units.
  3. To identify strategies to enhance nurses’ cultural competence to improve patient satisfaction in cardiac care units.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of cultural competence among nurses in cardiac care units in Sokoto State?
  2. How does nurses’ cultural competence influence patient satisfaction in cardiac care units?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve nurses’ cultural competence and enhance patient satisfaction in cardiac care units?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in cardiac care units in Sokoto State exhibit varying levels of cultural competence.
  2. There is a positive relationship between nurses' cultural competence and patient satisfaction in cardiac care units.
  3. Implementing cultural competence training for nurses leads to improved patient satisfaction in cardiac care units.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on cardiac care units in Sokoto State and will evaluate the impact of nurses’ cultural competence on patient satisfaction. Limitations may include challenges in accurately measuring cultural competence and patient satisfaction, as well as variability in patient perceptions based on individual cultural backgrounds.
